Relevant information

A beautiful historical port full of atmosphere and life, especially during the Carnival week in February.

Description

The Andalusian city of Cadiz sits on a peninsular jutting out into the Atlantic ocean, and is one of the oldest cities in the whole Western world, dating back more than 300 years. It has long been a bridge between Europe and Africa and being close to the Straits of Gibraltar it dominates the entrance to the Mediterranean Sea. It is a beautiful historical port full of atmosphere and life, especially during the Carnival week in February.

Attractions

Just down the road the town of Jerez de la Frontera is the home of Sherry – in the 16th Century regarded as the world’s finest wine – and popularised in the UK by Francis Drake when he took the city of Cadiz from the Spanish and in so doing also captured 2,900 barrels of Sherry about to be loaded onto ships and took them back to England. Many British families founded wine cellars and companies in this region from then on. Thus the region is full of “bodegas” and no trip is complete without a tour of a wine cellar and a wine-tasting experience!

Inland Cadiz is also a superb destination – full of snow-capped mountains and the famous white villages perching on cliffs – so Short Breaks in Andalusia can offer you a great combination of good local food and wine at reasonable prices while enjoying some outstanding visits to the Sierra where eagles, other birds of prey and deer abound in their beautiful natural habitats.

On the coast trendy Tarifa is one of the windsurf capitals of Europe, and you can enjoy some of the most gorgeous stretches of beach on the continent in Cadiz province – quite often free of other tourists as well. Additionally, Cadiz is also a very serious flamenco destination – many of the most famous artists – both dancers and singers – were born here and music and dance are the lifeblood of many locals. We can offer admission to genuine shows – well off the beaten Tourist track.

Cadiz truly is a “Real Spain” destination and the experience will stay with you for a lifetime.
